KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A Kalamazoo woman has been slapped with a huge fine but will avoid jail time for what is believed to be the largest asbestos contamination case in state history.
She and two other men were charged in the case. They had won the contract to recover and recycle materials from the old Consumers Energy generating plant at Morrow Dam in Comstock.
The Environmental Protection Agency claims Luanne Labrie, Cory Hammond and Robert White violated the clean air act by not following procedures to safely remove asbestos, in an effort to cut costs and increase the bottom line.
They were ordered to pay $700,000 restitution. Labrie was given 3 months probation Wednesday.
