KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Dispatch Board has picked a local candidate to help them put together a 911 dispatch center.
They voted to open negotiations with Jeff Troyer, who is currently the director of 911 dispatch in Calhoun County. He guided their consolidation process a few years ago.
Currently, Kalamazoo County has five different centers that take 911 calls, some more antiquated than others.
The next big challenge for the group will be figuring out how to fund the operation. They are currently using a 42-cent surcharge on all phones to fund the start up, but some combination of current funding, a millage or a higher surcharge is being considered.
