KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A draft city ordinance that will regulate stadium lights and public address systems is heading for the Kalamazoo Planning Commission.
The issue has sparked a lot of tension between Kalamazoo College and homeowners who live near the school’s new sports complex. After a series of forums, they have come up with a compromise that sets restrictions on the college.
City Planner Rebecca Kik said next stop is the planning commission on Nov. 5, then on to the city commission.
“We’ve tried so hard trying to thread this needle of how to balance K-College being a successful athletic institution and how to protect the neighborhood,” Kik said.
There were some concern Thursday that the city had gone too far, that they might have actually hurt the sports programs at K-College, which would result in declining enrollments and lowered property values for homeowners.
There will still be plenty of opportunity for public input.
