KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A non-profit group which helps Kalamazoo-area people struggling with homelessness says it supports a proposed millage that would raise funds to combat the problem.
Rick Stravers is the executive director of Open Doors Kalamazoo, which operates shelters and rents apartments to people struggling with financial stability. He said his organization does a good job, but growth in the homeless population has made things burdensome.
He’s hoping property-owners would be willing to help out with that.
“$5.85 on the average household, but it will serve 100 families a year for six years, to 600 families total will get help,” Stravers said.
He also says homelessness is not just affecting adults in the Kalamazoo area.
“We had 1,828 homeless children last year,” Stravers said. “That’s unduplicated homeless kids.”
Voters will vote on the measure Nov. 3.
