ALMENA TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — Several drivers in Almena Township have been given tickets after being caught ignoring road closure signs at a construction site on County Road 653 near 28th Avenue.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department received complaints from the road commission that drivers were ignoring signs and using the road anyway.
Two deputies staked the intersection out and watched as people stopped and got out of their vehicles to move cones and signs, then drive past the barriers.
Deputies say the barriers are up to protect the road workers, and the road itself, which could be damaged if the surface is driven over while it’s still under construction.
Numerous drivers were cited for disobeying traffic control devices. They will pay a fine and could lose 3 points on their license because it happened in a construction zone.
