LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Senate has approved a bill that would make local bans on particular dog breeds illegal.
It passed 25-11.
Twenty-seven communities in Michigan have outlawed ownership of specific breeds, mostly pit bulls, because of horrifying attacks and other incidents.
Cities would still be able to require that dogs be put on a leash and licensed.
Dog groups say breed bans violate the rights of dog owners and equate to discrimination. Other opponents say the state is overstepping its authority and imposing one-size-fits-all rules on local communities that face specific situations.
The legislation now heads to the House.
