PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — The woman from Three Rivers who hit the Powerball jackpot isn’t the only local to be rewarded by the Michigan Lottery this week.
Portage Public Schools teacher Amanda Thorpe has been given this week’s excellence in education award by the lottery bureau for helping revive the student newspaper at Portage Community High School, and turn it into an award-winning publication.
She was presented with $500 for her personal use, another $500 for her classroom or program and a plaque by Michigan State University head basketball coach Tom Izzo.
One of the weekly winners will go on to be named the lottery’s teacher of the year, which comes with a $10,000 check.
