KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Wednesday is the big “count day” in Michigan schools, where attendance will count 90 percent toward how much money the state sends each district for operations.
Supt. Michael Rice with Kalamazoo Public Schools says there are actually two days connected to a very complex and rigorously-regulated process that’s a bit more complicated than taking a headcount during homeroom.
“Though you have an official count day and days, there are months worth of audit checks associated there with (that process) before you finally arrive at that number,” Rice said.
They are projecting their count will be higher by over 80 students, but that’s only because of the Kalamazoo Promise, which provides an opportunity for free college tuition.
Most other public school districts are projecting another decline this year.
