CALHOUN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — Authorities in Calhoun County are calling the collision that killed cyclist Gregory Harrington just over a week ago a terrible tragedy, but aren’t saying the prominent local physician nor the driver of the van that struck him were at fault for the accident.
He was apparently another victim of Michigan’s roads.
An accident reconstructionist confirms accounts from inside the van that Harrington’s bike hit crumbling pavement along M-78, throwing Harrington directly into the path of the van. He was then struck by the vehicle, which was being driver by a 15-year-old holding a learner’s permit.
Sheriff Matt Saxton tells the Battle Creek Enquirer the age, skill and experience of the driver would have made no difference, given the situation.
Harrington was peddling to Lansing to catch the Michigan State University football game the next day when the accident occurred.
