KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve had a person of interest in the hit-and-run death of Eric Cross for some time, but never enough evidence to pursue charges.
Undersheriff Pauli Matyas said, now that the person has been arrested on unrelated charges, they’re closer to closing the case.
However, a witness says they saw another man and woman in the car with the suspect the night Cross was struck and dragged.
“If they’re willing to come forward to get the matter straightened around, that certainly weighs pretty heavily in the ultimate decision-making process,” Matyas said.
He also said the window of opportunity for the rest of the core group to come forward won’t be open forever.
“Now the time to get in,” Matyas said. “Right now, once you talk to the police, it’s a statement. But, once to talk to police, it’s an excuse.”
Cross was 16 when he was struck and killed near Vicksburg.
