LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A new law takes effect Thursday that will make your purchases at websites like Amazon.com and Overstock.com a bit more expensive.
Digitial retailers with a presence in Michigan will now be forced to collect the state’s six percent sales tax under the Main Street Fairness Law, which was passed with bipartisan support last year after a strong push by brick-and-mortar retailers.
The law requires online stores with fulfillment centers and other facilities on Michigan soil to levy the tax at checkout. But, a tax-free loophole still exits, however, if a Michigander shops from an Internet shop that has no physical presence in the state.
The requirement is expected to raise up to $60 million annually in once-lost tax revenue.
