OAKLAND COUNTY (WKZO) — The Oakland County Health Department has confirmed the first death attributed to West Nile Virus this year.
Officials say the victim was an 81-year-old woman. Her death is the first in the county due to the virus since 2003 and the first in Michigan this year.
Last week the health department confirmed they had two human cases of West Nile Virus.
Late this week they announced that they had found four dead birds that all tested positive for West Nile in Branch and St. Joseph Counties.
Residents are being urged to limit their outdoor activity from dusk to dawn, wear long sleeved shirts and pants and use a mosquito repellent containing the chemical DEET.
