LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Levels of an invasive, fish-eating parasite are at a 20-year low in Lake Michigan.
The Great Lakes Fishery Commission says sea lamprey numbers have also reached 30-year lows in Lake Huron.
The agency is crediting the drop to better containment efforts by local agencies and increased federal funding.
The toothy, eel-like creatures tend to kill around 10 million pounds of fish annually. That’s down from 103 million pounds in the 1930s.
