JACKSON (WKZO-AM) — The most recent polls in Michigan show Dr. Ben Carson just a couple of percentage points ahead of Donald Trump, but additional polls show him falling to third behind a surging Carly Fiorina.
The sag behind Fiorina comes after comments made last weekend on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he said that a Muslim shouldn’t be president.
“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” Carson said on the Sunday morning talk program.
He stepped back those remarks during a stop in Jackson on Wednesday.
“Anybody who lives according to American values and principles and is willing to put our constitution above their religious ideology is acceptable to me,” Carson said Wednesday afternoon.
Since Sunday, he has been sharply criticized by Muslim organizations, and rebuked by other candidates who say he should know that there is no religious test to be President.
He was in Jackson to visit the place that Michigan claims is the spot where the Republican Party was born, at the Under the Oaks landmark.
