PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — The coroner’s office says a Niles resident found unresponsive inside the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Pittsfield Township died from an accidental heroin overdose.
The Michigan Department of Corrections said a jailor found 25-year-old Kayla Miller before 9 p.m. on July 16.
Michigan State Police investigators say they’re still looking into the death and trying to figure out how the drugs entered the facility.
The former waitress was serving a sentence of one to four years for larceny concurrently with another sentence for uttering and publishing, which has similarities to a forgery charge.
Both violations occurred in Berrien County.
It’s the first drug-related death at that facility this year.
