UNDATED (WTVB) – Parents and people who care for kids need to know that hand sanitizer is proving to be very dangerous around children. Since 2010, poison control hotlines report a 400-percent increase in calls involving children under 12 swallowing hand sanitizer.
With alcohol contents ranging from 45 to 95-percent , a few drops can get kids dangerously drunk and often cause alcohol poisoning. Health officials also say some children do it intentionally to get drunk.
They note the scented sanitizers are the most appealing to young kids and recommend keeping them out of reach of children, or using non-alcohol based sanitizers.
