KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A young Kalamazoo man who let his passion for a young lady grow into a violent rage will spend nearly 30 years in prison.
It was a year ago Tuesday that Adam Shigwadja, then 18, broke into the home of the girl who dumped him, Sophia Putney-Wilcox, then 17, and ambushed her.
Prosecutor Jeff Getting said the victim has shown remarkable strength and poise, despite being slashed with a knife and set on fire.
“She stood up to her attacker, she’s testified in court, and she was the one who did all that was needed to make sure that he was held accountable,” Getting said.
Shigwadja was given the max — 29 to 60 years for home invasion, assault and attempted arson.
Putney-Wilcox plans to spend time talking to other teens about abusive relationships and how to get out of them.
