LANSING, MI (WHTC) – A Marquette County woman is the first in Michigan history to come down with bubonic plague, a scourge associated more with the Dark Ages than modern times. The state Department of Health and Human Services won’t identify the victim, but The Chaffee County Times in Buena Vista, Colorado reports that Alisha Plescher contracted the disease after attending the Gentlemen of the Road Music Festival in Salida where there had been reported plague activity,
She is now recovering at home after receiving antibiotics, while the area where she had been hiking now has warning signs. There have been 14 cases of the plague in the US so far this year, with four fatalities.
