KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — With school back in session, AAA is urging Michigan drivers to stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones, after over 330 children were struck and killed by vehicles last year.
Spokesperson Susan Hiltz said the bulk of the fatalities and at least 13,000 injuries were reported after school.
“Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. is really a high-risk time for child-pedestrian fatalities, but, at any time, we really want people to be cautious in the morning and in the afternoon,” Hiltz said.
Speed played a role in most of the collisions.
“Look down at the speedometer and make sure you’re going the posted speed limit, or maybe a little bit slower as the kids get back into the groove of waiting for their buses,” Hiltz said.
Hiltz also said drivers should reduce distractions, shift into reverse responsibly and watch for bicyclists.
