KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — As the school year begins, newly-released studies are providing further evidence about how important it is to read to young children.
One study, written by the American Academy of Pedeatrics, shows that young children who were often read to had increased brain activity, while another revealed even picture books increase vocabulary and help children create images associated with words.
“As they’re being read to, it very much so stimulates their brain,” Western Michigan University Reading Center and Clinic Director Deanna Roland said. “They’re able to create a picture and create an image.”
Roland also said parents should read to children at least 15 minutes every day.
