KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — WMU Students once again drifted out of their cramped apartments and dorm rooms and gathered along Michigan Avenue by the thousands, socializing, some drinking and partying but Public Safety reports no major problems, or party arrests Saturday night.
There was one minor hit and run fender bender Friday night along Michigan Avenue.
Saturday night, a young man suffered a broken leg when he darted into the roadway and was struck by a car near the Wendy’s just west of the WMU campus.
He is reported in good condition. The driver was not cited.
It appears that Public Safety’s decision to apply the same kind of consumer oriented approach they have applied in other public contacts is paying off. Instead of responding to noise issues, they tried to mainly respond to fights and incidents where their presence was welcome, even by students.
That is considerably different than the confrontational, Zero-tolerance position the department has taken in previous years.
