KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The vote was Tuesday and it was very much in favor of improved and expanded bus services around Kalamazoo, Portage and the entire metro area, but Transportation Director Sean McBride says it will be more than a year before new services can be introduced.
It will take that long before the tax revenues approved this week are actually available.
The city doesn’t collect the bus millage until next Summer and it won’t be collected until early fall in the Townships.
He says they have the buses for expanded evening service and adding Sunday routes, but they will have to hire more drivers.
In the meantime, they hope to go through the paper work and transfer the assets of the Bus System, which are currently owned by the City to the new Authority. That includes the buses, the bus barn downtown and the offices which were largely bought with federal funds.
