KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Nationally there has been one case after the other lately of police misconduct and brutality it seems.
An attorney for the ACLU in Detroit says when they run into cases like that in Michigan, and talk to police officials about the issue, they cite Kalamazoo Public Safety as a model for doing it the right way.
Attorney Mark Fancher says despite incident after incident nationally, it still happens all the time in eastern Michigan, but doesn’t get the publicity.
He says bringing in consultants and doing studies and trainging programs to address the issue as Kalamazoo Public Safety has done is what every department should be doing.
He admits erasing generations of prejudice can’t be done overnight, but Kalamazoo has taken the right steps to begin addressing the issues so many other police departments can’t seem to get a handle on.
Fancher was one of the featured panelists at a public forum on the issue of police violence directed at minorities held at the Douglass Association last evening.
They concluded that even in Kalamazoo, its still a work in progress, and is something that will need constant maintainance.
