KALAMAZOO (WKZO)– It was good news in hard times when M.P.I. announced in 2008 plans to reopen former Upjohn labs downtown creating hundreds of new research jobs testing new drugs and other products for companies all over the U.S.
A year later the great recession hit.
Yesterday the Michigan Strategic fund cancelled the tax incentive they approved for the project, revoking the Renaissance Zone designation.
The Mattawan based research firm has taken 750-thousand in tax incentives but says it spent far more than that maintaining the buildings.
One of the buildings has since been donated to WMU and has been transformed into its new Medical School.
