LANSING (WKZO)– Reporters have gotten a chance to get a closer look at the work taking place at the very top of state government.
Not the legislature or the Governor’s office where everyone has gone on summer break.
No reporters put on hard hats and journeyed to the top of the capitol building were a lot of progress is being made to fix the leaks in the Capitol Dome.
Construction Manager John Brechtersbauer says the leaks were causing damage to the historic interior of the building. The repairs they make this year should keep lawmakers dry for another 50 years at least.
They are actually repairing a sheet metal roof behind the carved stone, that keeps the rain out, and replacing some of the sandstone carvings that have eroded with time.
They are scheduled to be done before the first snow flies in November.
