LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Another possible stateside ballot initiative for 2016 is being considered by some in Lansing. Adrian Hemond of Grassroots Midwest told MIRS News that he’s leading discussions about asking voters to shrink the size of the Legislature, following the 2020 national census, from 110 House members to 80, and from 38 Senate seats to 25. Hemond said that the size of the two Chambers have become “unwieldly and difficult to deal with.” Term limits and full-time status issues haven’t been brought up.
Meanwhile, EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn told MIRS News that those who may want to put the question of raising Michigan’s Corporate Income Tax rate from six percent to 11 percent before voters statewide next year may need to develop more support before beginning such a petition drive. Porn said that analysis of prior surveys show that only half of respondents would favor such a hike, and that successful ballot initiatives traditionally need around 60 percent support to get up off of the ground.
