GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – The Better Business Bureau of West Michigan is alerting DTE Energy natural gas customers of a scam involving an attempted service switch without their knowledge. A rep claiming to be from DTE would ask if there was a Gas Recovery Fee on the latest bill, saying that it was an error. The scammer would then take the bill to remove the charge and to get a refund, but the customer is instead switched to Direct Energy Services, a licensed alternate supplier with a mediocre BBB record and higher rates.
The BBB says that the Gas Recovery Fee is a legitimate charge, and recommends that you do not be pressured into providing personal information or sharing your bill; request proof of employment with company/Employment ID card; call the company to confirm the authorization of the employee on hand; and to contact the BBB.
