DETROIT (WHTC) – Detroit may no longer be in deep financial trouble, but Wayne County has now that miasma surrounding it. An independent review team has declared a fiscal emergency for that unit of government, and Governor Snyder on Wednesday concurred with those findings. The team’s conclusion came after two-plus weeks of study involving audits, unbudgeted spending and unfunded healthcare liabilities totaling more than a billion dollars, among other items.
Wayne County now has until next Wednesday afternoon to request a hearing before a decision is made on whether an emergency manager is appointed, a neutral evaluation is commissioned, a consent agreement is drawn up, or Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection paperwork is filed.
