LANSING (WKZO) — It looks like Aramark is out and a new private food service provider will be taking over providing food service in the State’s Prison system.
The contract with Aramark has been controversial, with reports of maggots in food supplies, contraband smuggling and sex trading, among other allegations.
It hasn’t been helped by the fact that the state’s prison unions have strongly opposed privatization of the food service, and the loss of union jobs.
Gov. Rick Snyder issued the following statement on today’s announcement.
“Michigan will now partner with Trinity Services Group to provide food service for prisoners in all state-run correctional facilities. We will remain focused on moving forward. Michigan will continue to realize significant cost savings from this new contract. Our departments will work tirelessly with both companies to ensure a smooth, collaborative transition as well as quality service, security and safety within the facilities during the change.”
The “Detroit News” reports that there was a “mutual agreement” between Aramark and the State of Michigan to part ways, with talks to renew their three year deal underway and not going well.
