MINNEAPOLIS (WKZO) — Anyone who switched off last night’s Tigers-Twins game early because it looked like Detroit had the game in the bag, will be surprised to learn this morning that the Twinkies scored 7 runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Tigers and tie up the series at one game apiece.
It looked like Justin Verlander finally had his first win of the season, after pitching a good game, holding the twins to just five hits and one run and getting plenty of offense, holding a 5-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
Then Joakim Soria and Bruce Rondon came out of the Tiger bullpen and were taken apart by Twins batters. It was all topped off by Brian Dozier’s three run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to get the 8 to 6 win for Minnesota.
Yoenis Cespedes had three hits including a three-run homer for Detroit. Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez also hit dingers for Detroit.
If there is any good news to come out of the ball-game it was that Verlander looked sharp, perhaps no-longer the 100-MPH flame-thrower he once was but maintained command with fastballs in the mid to low 90’s.
Game three in Minneapolis is today.
