PORTAGE (WKZO) — Portage police suspect jealousy may have been the motive for last week’s shooting on French Bay last Wednesday.
They plan to seek a warrant charging suspect 43-year-old Theresa Petto, with first degree murder on Monday.
They say the victim, 25-year-old Rachel Drafta, has died at Bronson Hospital Saturday after she lingered in critical condition for several days.
Detectives say Petto was angry because Drafta had been dating her ex-boyfriend.
Detectives say Petto confronted Drafta on the driveway where she was staying early Wednesday, and after what witnesses said was an angry exchange of words, Petto allegedly shot Drafta once behind the right ear and then walked away.
Responding Portage Public Safety Officers began CPR.
Others found Petto walking away on Old Mission, and found a gun registered to her tossed under a travel trailer nearby.
Investigators say they have since found evidence that the shooting was pre-meditated, but have not said what they have.
For now Petto, of Hastings, is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a Million dollars bond for assault.
