KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — A home in the 800 block of Woodward Avenue caught fire just before 2 Saturday morning, and was well advanced by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
Public Safety is investigating the cause because the home had been recently vacated.
It was not one of the large stately homes on Woodward in the historic Stuart Neighborhood, but rather a small run down two-story structure just to the north of that area.
The balloon construction and lack of firestops made the fire tougher to extinguish.
Firefighters entered the first floor to battle the flames, but couldn’t get to the upper story because of a compromised staircase. They had to fight the flames on the second floor from the outside.
