GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) — It is one of the biggest disaster preparedness drills in recent memory and it involves military and civilian public safety units from all over the state.
Its called “Northern Exposure 2015” and the scenario is that a dirty nuclear bomb has gone off near Grand Rapids.
Busloads of people from Pontiac and Terre Haute have been brought in to pose as victims for the simulation.
Major General Gregory J. Vadnais, commander of the Michigan National Guard says dozens of agencies are involved and having their skills and readiness tested.
Units from all over the state including the 51st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support unit based at Fort Custer have mobilized.
And while chances of being nuked may be remote, many of the skills that will be practiced and responses that will be triggered are applicable to a wide range of disaster scenarios.
The three day simulation began Wednesday and runs through Friday.
