HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to deliver its decision on lifting gay marriage bans within the next few days, leaving Michigan county clerks to prepare for the potential change in policy.
If Michigan’s ban is overturned, county clerks may have to wait for the state to issue new forms before they can begin administering marriage licenses to gay couples. Ottawa County Clerk Justin Roebuck doesn’t plan on waiting for the new forms to come in, but is willing to accommodate for same-sex couples by placing asterisks next to “bride” and “groom” and other gender-specific terms.
Allegan County Clerk Joyce Watts, however, intends to follow the state’s requirements closer, and will wait for the new forms to come in.
“Allegan County clerks have a long history of following the law and fully intend to follow it no matter what that is,” Watts shared with the Holland Sentinel.
