LANSING (WKZO) — The Michigan State Senate will take up legislation dropping the minimum wage for 18- and 19-year-olds in Michigan to 85 percent of the general minimum wage in Michigan or the federal base wage, whichever is greater.
It would lump those teens with those under 18.
In addition, the bill sponsored by Portage Republican Margaret O’Brien would increase the hourly training wage for those under 20 from $4.25 to $6.25. The state general minimum hourly wage goes from $8.15 to $8.50 next year.
It is supported by the State Chamber and the Small Restaurant Association, but opposed by labor and by most teens we would imagine.
The Senate is taking a week off and then returning to the Capitol to put together a roads funding package.
The State House will only be meeting sporadically this summer. Supporters and opponents should have some time to contact their lawmaker and let them know how they feel.
