LANSING (WKZO) — Battle Creek State Representative John Bizon has proposed a measure that would remove the phrase “human monstrosity” in state law that was written some time ago and was meant to describe a disabled person.
The House Criminal Justice Committee today voted unanimously to remove the verbiage. Bizon, who sponsored House Bill 4709, said the language is in a law banning doctors from exposing or exhibiting in public individuals who are disabled or deformed.
“Still having this term in state law is truly appalling and embarrassing,” said Rep. Bizon. “No one should be referred to this way, and it’s time to update some of our laws to show a respect for those with deformities or disabilities.”
The bill is part of a larger effort by House Republicans to repeal or revise outdated criminal laws in Michigan.
HB 4709 now goes to the full House for consideration.
