KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners, golfers and members of the Municipal Golf Association all agree that the Eastern Hills Golf course is a treasure, but they voted to sell it anyway.
The city has an offer on the table for 2.2-million dollars, the KMGA is 1.7-million in debt and while there were protests from golfers and an environmentalist or two, commissioners say after years of trying to turn around the city’s struggling golf courses, they have run out of options.
And as wrenching as this is, several commissioners sounded a more ominous warning, that future cuts and decisions could be even more painful as they approach the 2016 Budget. .
There is no indication what the developer plans to do with it, but upscale residential housing would seem to be the best use of the parcel.
