KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Summer vacation has begun for Kalamazoo School Students, and its extra long break this year, a full 90 days, because of where Labor Day falls on the calendar.
Students have been hearing for months that despite the fact it’s a break, they must keep reading.
Supt. Michael Rice understands it’s a busy schedule for students, between video games and texting, but they should be able to find some time to read.
He says each student going into the 4th,5th and 6th grades will be mailed 8-books over the summer free of charge, but only to prime the pump.
He says he wants to see a record number of books taken out of the library this summer by young readers as well, all in an effort to keep students from losing their edge during the long summer break.
The best part may be that students can, if they choose, pick the books they want to read and not the ones picked for them by teachers or adults.
