LANSING, MI (WHTC) – The Michigan Senate has approved three bills allowing faith-based adoption agencies to recuse themselves from placements that clash with their religious beliefs. The legislation passed Wednesday by a largely party-line vote of 26-12, with all but one Republican voting yes.
Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof of Olive Township says the legislation formalizes decades of existing policy supporting the work of faith-based agencies. Senators added an amendment that would require adoption agencies that object to placements on religious grounds to do so in writing, either referring them to another agency or the state’s list of licensed placement agencies.
