SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO) — A day at the beach may be no day at the beach if it ends up in the emergency room.
That was the story for a brother and sister from Portage who ignored the red flag warning at South Beach in South Haven this afternoon and went out into the water anyway.
The 13-year-old girl went out to try and help her 10-year-old brother who was in distress
. She ended up clinging to life buoy. Two bystanders from Indiana, Josh Banks and Ryan Gaylen swam out to help and said when they got to the boy he was blue, unresponsive and about to go under.
He was hauled to shore and revived.
Both of them were taken to South Haven Health System for evaluation of exhaustion and hypothermia but should recover.
