KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The Upjohn Institute has just released a study that when it comes to public education, you get what you pay for, and they recommend the state find a new way to fund schools, a method that puts more money into education, puts the money where its needed and offers more flexibility.
Co-Author Kevin Hollenbeck says Proposal A has become a straight jacket, requiring equal distribution of funds, even when it doesn’t make sense.
He says they spent a year comparing national numbers and found there has to be more flexibility to put the money where the need is greatest.
The research concludes that most other states have increased funding faster than Michigan and it’s resulted in improved test scores and higher achievement in those other states.
Hollenbeck says he issued the report now because the Legislature is working on the budget now. The study was underwritten by the Kellogg and Steelcase Foundations.
