PORTAGE (WKZO) — Here’s a trashy story. The Portage City Council has approved a $6-million 9-year contract with Best Way to provide “single stream” trash pick-up and recycling services.
That’s a little different than the “dual stream” system now in place, and easier for homeowners, who only have to separate the recyclables from the non-recyclables and the trash company does the rest, sorting the plastic from the paper from the tin at a plant in northern Indiana.
Of concern to the mayor and Councilman Terry Urban was the nine year 6-million dollar contract, longer than any they have signed before.
His fear is that if it doesn’t work out, they are stuck with the company with no recourse.
Council members want performance standards written into the contract that would give them a way out if citizens complain.
Several area townships already have single stream hauling in place, but Portage would be the biggest municipality using it in the County.
