NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (WHTC) – Nearly 300 students are about to face off to see who is this year’s best speller including 11 from Michigan.
The 88th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee kicks off today at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
The 285 competitors, including Lily Mears of the Kent Intermediate School District, have been whitled down from more than eleven-million students who competed in smaller bees in their classrooms and schools. The students come from all 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
ESPN wil be covering the preliminary rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as the championship round Thursday night.
