LANSING, MI (WHTC) – As the newly-formed state House Roads and Economic Development Committee began taking testimony on Speaker Kevin Cotter’s 1.05 billion-dollar road plan, an alternative proposal seeks a hearing. Ypsilanti Democrat David Rutledge wants to annually increase Michigan’s 19-cent-per-gallon gas tax by a nickel over three years, while hiking the 14-cent-per-gallon diesel tax to match the standard fuel levy. Majority Republicans are leery of considering such a straight-up tax increase.
