DETROIT (WKZO)- The Detoit Tigers were crusing through six innings as they were leading the surprising Houston Astros 5-0, behind a two run home run off the bat of Nick Castellanos, his fourth of the season.
Then the Houston Astros struck in the seventh inning scoring three runs and then adding another run in the eighth to cut the game to 5-4.
Then in the ninth inning with Tigers closer Joakim Soria pitching, Astros pinch hitter Preston Tucker hit his first career home run to tie the game 5-5. It was Soria’s first blown save of the season.
In the 11th inning though James McCann stepped to the plate to lead off the inning agaisnt Tony Sipp, who has dominated the Tigers in his career with the Indians and Astros. McCann hit a fly ball to left center that cleared the wall and gave the Tigers a 6-5 victory in walk-off fashion in 11 innings.
It was McCann’s second home run of his career. His other home run was an inside-the-park home run that he hit earlier in the season in Minnesota.
Alex Wilson (1-0) gets the win for the Tigers. Tigers’ starter David Price pitched 6.2 innings giving up three runs, two earned on five hits while walking one and striking out 12.
The Tigers will seek to win the second game of their four game series against the Astros Friday at 6:40 on AM 590 WKZO. Alfredo Simon (4-2 3.04 ERA) will start for the Tigers while the Astros will counter with Collin McHugh (5-1 4.09 ERA)
