LANSING (WKZO)– A Michigan House committee has fixed a bill designed to prevent local municipalities from passing their own ordinances on work place issues.
Some major American cities have adopted minimum wages, sick leave and furlough ordinances that were stricter than state or federal rules.
Opponents, like Kalamazoo Rep. Jon Hoadley complained that its biggest impact in Michigan would be on local non-discrimination ordinances that protect LGBTQ rights. He says those were exempted by the committee yesterday.
But he says the whole idea of stripping cities of their right to determine their own rules and respond to local circumstances is wrong.
The measures will go to the House floor in a few days and a vigorous debate is expected.
