ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – Officials of Consumers Energy and DTE Energy took members of the state Capital press corps through a tour of Consumers’ 930-megawatt Zeeland Generating Station off of Fairview Street. It was an effort to extol the virtues of going to natural gas-fueled power plants as the two major utilities are closing coal-fueled facilities due to age and stricter federal guidelines. Consumers and DTE want state lawmakers to abolish energy provider choice and reinstate a restricted monopoly for them. The tour comes as Consumers is appealing a 260 million-dollar tax assessment by the city of Zeeland, saying that the 30-acre site should only be valued at 112 million.
