BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — A suicidal teen who warned police he wanted to commit “suicide by cop” ended up dead after he confronted two officers on the Linear Park path north of the Police Department, but its not clear who fired the fatal shot.
The officers say 19-year-old Zachary Campbell gave them no choice, he had a gun in his waistband, pulled it and began firing at them.
They returned fire, but they aren’t sure they hit him.
They say he may have fatally wounded himself.
They will have a better idea after an autopsy and ballistics tests.
Chief Jim Blocker says neither officer was hit. They have been put on administrative leave until a routine post shooting review is completed.
Blocker has also called in State Police to handle the shooting investigation.
