KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — What is the main thing keeping you from improving the insulation in your business or plant, or putting solar panels on the roof? In most cases its money. It costs a lot up front and the pay out can take decades.
The Kalamazoo County Commission has adopted a resolution to start a Property Assessed Clean Energy program, which helps businesses with that financing through their taxes instead of a mortgage.
Commissioner John Geisler says he looked for flaws but couldn’t find any. He says everyone appears to benefit from the funding plan.
Commissoner Kevin Wordelman says the resolution is just step one, it will be a success when banks and contractors are on board.
The financing is usually worked out so that the savings in energy costs more than cover the additional expense added to tax bills.
Many other states and communities have already implemented the PACE strategy because it makes so much sense.
