LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Efforts to add 1,000 new officers annually over the next three years by the Michigan Department of Corrections are underway. A class of 292 recruits has enrolled in the Corrections Officer Academy as the agency is taking training “in-house” instead of using community colleges to offset growing personnel losses, especially to retirement.
According to MDOC officials, the Academy is costing the state $8.4 million to operate, and new recruits will earn between $16 and $25 an hour.
